Erik ten Hag has extended his Manchester United contract after the club decided to stick with the Dutchman following FA Cup success last month. Ten Hag appeared to be nearing the exit door after guiding the club to a record number of league defeats (13), which saw United finish eighth in the Premier League. However, after an end-of-season review, the club have decided to reward the manager.
Erik ten Hag has extended his Manchester United contract ahead of his third season at Old Trafford. The club underwent a thorough end-of-season review and decided to stick with Ten Hag after initial reports indicated that he would be dismissed following the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Following the success, United have triggered the 12-month option written into Ten Hag’s contract, extending his stay at the club until at least 2026.
“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together,” Ten Hag said. “Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.
“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.
“In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”
Ten Hag joined Man Utd from Ajax in 2022, and in his first season secured third sport in the Premier League – gaining UEFA Champions League qualification – and added the EFL Cup to United’s illustrious trophy cabinet.
After a promising start to life in Manchester for the 54-year-old, things quickly unravelled the following year as United slumped to an eighth-place finish, their lowest in the Premier League era – and their worst since 1990.
They lost a club-record number of top-flight games (13) and were also dumped out of the Champions League after finishing bottom of their group.
